the way i make my own beats is before i even enter any starting beats in to my program is to stand up and nod my head. this puts me in a “dance floor” state that gets me ready to come up with great beats instantly. when I’m moving around and groovin a little bit like i do when i hear a bangin beat i almost always start to hear a nice groove in my head. it works like a lucky charm.
The next thing I do is go over to my computer and enter in the basic beat data from what I just heard in my head in my little practice dance floor session. I don’t stop moving while I’m at the computer. This is important because it keeps you in the flow of the part. I plug in the basic beat – snare, bass, hats, clicks, and whatever else. Then I play the basic melody line or bass line if I have that too (which I usually do). I almost always hear drum and bass parts together, and sometimes more, right off the bat.
you can’t be too cool to move around a little and get the juice flowing. don’t try to be all hard and tough and write a body moving club banger – it won’t happen. you gotta loosen up and get in to the state you’re trying to capture or else what you write will fall flat and sound dry and uninspired. watch a few youtube videos of Pharrell or Timbaland in the studio and see how they move to their own music.
